Community embraces new Firebirds in Carthage-Bound program
This year, 21 new Firebirds football and men’s soccer players took part in the Carthage-Bound pre-orientation program, building the self-confidence and support networks they’ll need to excel in college.
The Office of Equity and Inclusion launched the program in 2022, helping incoming male student-athletes of color to navigate what can be a complex transition to college. Conducted each year before the start of the fall semester, it supplements Carthage’s main New Student Orientation.
This program grew out of the College’s participation in Moon Shot for Equity, an initiative to wipe out race- and income-based disparities in graduation rates by 2030. Research shows that students who feel like they belong are more likely to stay enrolled, and that Carthage-Bound’s target population benefits most from early guidance.
Through icebreakers and discussions, participants are introduced to some of the people, places, and programs they’ll rely on most during their time on campus. This year, that circle expanded to include supporters in the surrounding area. The Community Connections session on Sept. 9 drew about 40 local residents to campus, where they connected with team members over dinner.
